Today marks the 10 year anniversary of the release of the first Brown Bag AllStars (BBAS) project! How do I remember? Easy, I remember it dropping on my Goddaughter’s birthday in 2008. We crafted this mixtape (really album) starting in September 2007 and into approx April 2008 - then we spent the next few months coming up with a gameplan (because we were really young and ‘new’) / getting the project mixed by our homie Jesse Gladstone at Chung King Studios. I used to record at the homie Jesse “Belief” Shatkin’s studio in Brooklyn, with my group The Kill World (The Nezitiq Mute: Jesse Mechanic, Hi-Q, Atom aka Mage + Me & DJ Goo). After hanging out with everyone from FatBeats NY that went on to become the original 8-person line up for BBAS, I started to invite them to Belief’s to do some features for my solo stuff that I was working on, which became the first three BBAS songs (“Boss is Back” “Cut You” and an untitled song) - I scrapped my entire solo album (Summer/Fall 2007), I knew I wasnt ‘ready’ and I didn’t have a ‘sound’ yet - I was trying to do what other people were doing and nothing ‘new’ came natural to me yet. The only stuff I was doing, solo-wise, that was ‘new’ sounding was the collabos with my FatBeats homies that I worked with at the record store. Sidenote: This also marks the 10 year anniversary of the name: J57. I went by JLOG1C from fall 1998 to fall 2008. I stylized it ‘JLOG1C’ to make it stand out because I knew it was a really basic name and I was a really eclectic music fan and knew a basic name wouldn’t suit me, so days before we got the The Brown Tape CD’s pressed, I changed my name to J57 - The Audible Doctor came up with it, as I went insane trying to think of a new name in time for the CD pressing deadline (I had like, 4 days in total to do this). Half of the songs on this mixtape/album were produced by The Audible Doctor & the other half by me, along with “Dinner’s Ready” which was co-produced by the one and only, DJ Goo. Killer Mike (yes, THEE Killer Mike) actually was the one that gave us the idea to package our mixtape up in brown bags when we sold it at FatBeats. Mike had an in store at FatBeats in July, 2008 for his new LP & the entire BBAS crew came through to show support / we ended up hanging out with him for a really long time after, just chopping it up about hiphop - he even gave me his #, but I never wanted to bother him / I didn’t know how to stay in touch with people back then lol. (Thank you again, Killer Mike!) We were doing 1 to 2 shows per week around NYC for all of 2008, building a name (not really a buzz yet - that was spring 2009, thankfully). We were very unknown, so we were able to push the BBAS CD (wrapped up in a brown bag) to the customers that didn’t already know WE were Brown Bag AllStars - which, at the time, was probably 90% of them. We cleared a little over 300 mixtapes that year just out of the store and hand to hand at our shows. We worked so hard to get the name out - we’d plaster the entire city with BBAS stickers - to the point that fans started come in to FatBeats in 2009! . 8 months later, we were approached by Coalmine Records to officially release the project on iTunes, etc, and to package it up with 2 new remixes that The Audible Doctor & I produced. We shot our first music video in April 2009 for “Undeniable (Audible Doctor Remix)” directed by Jed I. Rosenberg & Ethan - we linked with them via our good friend Chaz Kangas. Our main goal for (OG) The Brown Tape, was to band together to create our own sound. Our second goal was to make music so dope that DJ Eclipse & DJ Premier would spin it (on the Halftime Show or at the clubs/shows they rocked). I’m proud of what we’ve accomplished. It was one hell of an incredible time and experience. The whole Brown Bag era is and will always be very close/important to me. Oh and… SURPRISE! We have a full collabo LP with Bumpy Knuckles that’s being mixed RIGHT NOW - so expect that later this year or top of next year 200%!
